Corfu, a cosmopolitan island in the Ionian Sea, is the second largest of the Ionian Islands. With beautiful nature and architecture, its history, rooted in Greek mythology, is full of conquests. The legacy of these struggles is the prominence of two castles enclosing Corfu city, which the Greek government has officially declared a Kastropolis ("castle city").
From medieval times and into the 17th century, Corfu was a defensive stronghold of the European States against the Ottoman Empire becoming one of the most fortified places in Europe. Fortifications of the island were used by the Venetians against Ottoman intrusion and Corfu repulsed several Turkish sieges. Corfu was under British rule and was eventually unified with modern Greece in 1864 under the Treaty of London.
In 2007, the old city was designated for the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A very popular tourist destination, the 1994 European Union summit was held on Corfu.
